The four books

A documented family record · about this record

Four families, from Galicia, Šariš and Masovia to wherever their descendants live.

The Hofstatters of Nowy Wiśnicz, the Lilings and Honigs of Stropkov and Košice, the Barks of Długosiodło, the Berliners and Morgensterns of Myszyniec — and everyone descended from them. Every person here is tied to a record; where the paper runs out, the page says so.

Where the story happens

Five towns, three journeys.

Two centuries in Galicia, Šariš and Masovia; then, in six years, Slovakia, Auschwitz, Bavaria, the Arkhangelsk forests and Kazakhstan; and after that Melbourne, Montreal, Antwerp, Jerusalem and Brooklyn. The map is schematic — degrees of latitude and longitude, no coastlines — so that the distances are true.

Four founding families · four books

Every branch is a peer, and every family has its own book.

The four families are not related to one another; each has its own book, and each book tells that family's story on its own — its chapters, people, tree, places and sources, as long as the story needs. How the four lines came to meet is told on its own page. Open a book by clicking its panel.
